In the realm of motherhood, an aura of romanticism often envelops the experience, obscuring the raw truth that lies beneath. However, the project “Virgins on the Cross," is determined to cast a different light on this journey, aiming to document the ambivalence that is innate to motherhood. This project strives to challenge the idealised notions surrounding motherhood and shed light on its veracious nature. The project delves into the notion of visceral love that defines the mother-child bond. While this bond is often celebrated and revered, I seek to unearth the unfiltered emotions that underlie this connection, exposing the tensions that every single mother experiences. It recognises the visceral mother-child bond, but also acknowledges the complexities, through explosion of vulnerabilities’ moments, that can often be overshadowed, providing a more realistic understanding of the journey, through a conversation that challenges the traditional narratives and invites consideration, dismantling the romanticised notions of motherhood in visual language. Virgins on the Cross is an expanded project that attempts to go beyond the simple representation of motherhood and aims to ignite discussion on identities, sexuality, confrontation, resilience amid the enigma of our mortality, the prospect of the unknown, analysis of which are the boundaries that define the ethic form in terms of self expression, integration of an iconography that is reluctant to be accepted and to unearth the layers of suppressed reality reshaping narratives. What could visually be, potentially and wrongly, considered ‘violent’, ‘abusing’ or disturbing is just performing the function of reclaiming truth. This reclamation, soaked in suspense and rich with pathos, serves as a metaphor for the conflicts that permeate our society aiming to amplify consciousness and perception in order to contribute to facilitate a more empathetic understanding about expectations, struggles and resistance of motherhood.
